Descendants of Leonard
Divan
Leonard Divan (1740 -
1827) came from Pfalz, S.W. Germany (although some
records say France) when he was a young man,
settling in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
He married Abigail
LNU (last name unknown) (b: Abt. 1740 d: Aft. 1830)
in about 1765. In 1781 he was taxed for two
horses, two cattle and eight sheep. On May 14, 1785, 300
acres of land was surveyed in Washington County for Leonard
Divan.
The
couple traveled from Pennsylvania to Ohio overland in a
covered wagon sometime between 1810 and 1815. They
then moved to Richland Township, Belmont County,
Ohio before settling in Perry Township, Coshocton
County, Ohio. Leonard had purchased the southwest
quarter of Section 18 in Perry Township on 5 July 1815,
and they are listed in the 1820 census of that
township.
Leonard was
a private in the Revolutionary War, serving in the
Washington County, Pennsylvania militia, fifth battalion,
George Miers Company. His DAR number is
600436. This allows any of his direct ancestors, if they
are interested, to join the national organization,
Sons/Daughters of the American Revolution.
Leonard and Abigail were both almost eighty years
of age on 31 October 1823 when Leonard made his last Will
and Testament. This item was probated in Coshocton County
on 17 November 1827, indicating his death probably
earlier in 1827, but as yet the date of his death and place of
burial remain unknown. Abigail declined to be
co-executor with her son John, on the grounds that she was
"too old and infirm". She was a woman in her eighties, living
with her son John, in the 1830 Ohio census. When she
died and where she was buried are unknown at
present.
There were several Divan boys who
volunteered in the Civil War. Most of them were in
Wisconsin Volunteers, Company G. Those who went to war
were Alexander, Frederick, Henry, James M., John B. and
Urias. Walter was in Company K. I have not sent
for any of their service records as yet, but will do that
soon.
John Divan and his
wife, Catherine Shrake, were both born in Pennsylvania
about 1798. "A Biographical Record of Rock, Green,
Grant, Iowa and Lafayette Counties" says that John served
in the War of 1812.
He removed to
Carlisle, Coshocton County, Ohio, sometime around 1830, where
all his children were born. After 1843, John
moved his family to Clarno, Green County, Wisconsin,
where he purchased a farm. According to the 1850
census, John was a farmer and Catherine could not read or
write.
Their youngest daughter, Lucinda,
married Henry M. Sweeney. Henry was born in Columbian
County, Ohio, and was also a farmer. They had ten
children. Their oldest daughter, Emmaline, was my
great-grandmother.
